About MElange Paints & Morphose

  • Mélange Paints has entered a new chapter, one rooted in curation, craftsmanship, and a more intentional approach to color. The rebrand was created to better reflect the direction of the company: a refined, naturalist-inspired house of color with a smaller, more considered palette and a stronger focus on timeless, complex finishes.

While our visual identity, color collection, and language have evolved, the heart of Mélange remains the same. We are still dedicated to beautiful, approachable paint for furniture, cabinetry, and creative interiors — made for customers who care about color, character, and lasting transformation.

  • Morphose is Mélange Paints' signature all-in-one furniture and cabinetry paint (formerly named the ONE formula).

It combines primer, color, and finish in a single product designed to provide exceptional adhesion, durability, and a beautiful low-luster finish.

  • Morphose is pronounced MOR-fōs (MOR-fohs).

The name is inspired by the idea of transformation and metamorphosis—the process of becoming something new while retaining the essence of what came before.

For us, Morphose represents the transformation that occurs when color changes a piece, a room, or even the atmosphere of an entire home.

  • Our beloved all-in-one formula has been renamed Morphose by Mélange as part of this new chapter.

The name Morphose comes from the idea of transformation — the process of becoming, changing, and taking on a new form. That felt like the perfect name for a paint created to transform furniture, cabinetry, and well-loved pieces into something renewed.

Morphose is the evolution of the formula many customers knew as ONE. It is still our water-based, self-leveling, acrylic mineral paint designed with primer, color, and protective finish in one. The new name simply brings the formula into alignment with the renewed Mélange brand and our focus on thoughtful, lasting transformation.

For longtime customers: if you loved ONE, Morphose is the formula to reach for.

  • We have learned that choosing color should feel inspiring rather than overwhelming.

The Morphose Collection was intentionally designed as a cohesive palette, with each color created to work beautifully alongside the others. Rather than offering hundreds of options, we focused on a thoughtfully edited collection built around atmosphere, harmony, and timeless design.

  • Furniture experiences far more wear than walls. Drawers are opened, doors are touched daily, and surfaces are cleaned regularly.

Morphose was developed specifically for furniture and cabinetry applications, providing strong adhesion, self-leveling properties, and long-term durability.

  • Yes.

Morphose is formulated with self-leveling properties that help minimize brush strokes and create a smoother finish as the paint dries.

While application technique and tools still matter, the paint is designed to flow and level after application, helping produce a refined finish with less visible brush texture than many traditional furniture paints.

    For best results:

    • Apply thin, even coats

    • Avoid overworking the paint

    • Use quality brushes, rollers, or spray equipment

    • Allow adequate drying time between coats

Like any furniture paint, some texture may still be visible depending on the surface, application method, and environmental conditions. However, Morphose is designed to level beautifully and reward a patient application.

  • Morphose dries to a refined lustrous finish that balances durability with a soft, sophisticated appearance.

  • Yes. Morphose is a water-based acrylic mineral paint that is low odor and easy to clean up with soap and water.

  • Yes. Morphose is formulated with low VOC content and is suitable for indoor use when applied according to directions.

surface preparation

  • Most projects require cleaning and light scuff sand preparation only.

However, glossy finishes, damaged surfaces, peeling paint, or repairs may benefit from more thorough sanding before painting.

  • Many projects can be completed without primer.

    We recommend:

    Bonding Primer for:

    • Laminate

    • Melamine

    • Slick factory finishes

    • Difficult surfaces

    Stain Blocking Primer for:

    • Pine

    • Oak

    • Cedar

    • Knots

    • Water stains

    • Smoke damage

    • Tannin-rich woods

  • Certain woods naturally contain tannins that can migrate through paint and create yellow, orange, or brown discoloration.

A stain-blocking primer helps prevent this issue.

  • Yes.

For best results, thoroughly clean the surface, scuff sand if possible, and apply Undercoat Clear Bonding Primer before painting.

  • Yes.

Any wax, furniture polish, oils, or silicone-based products should be thoroughly removed before painting. Paint adheres to the surface beneath it—not to wax or residue.

  • Wax, furniture polish, oils, and silicone-based products can interfere with paint adhesion and should be removed before painting.

    To remove wax:

    1. Apply a quality degreaser, wax remover, or mineral spirits to a clean lint-free cloth.

    2. Work in small sections, wiping the surface thoroughly.

    3. Frequently change to clean cloths to avoid spreading residue back onto the piece.

    4. Pay special attention to tabletops, drawer fronts, armrests, and areas that receive frequent handling.

    5. Once cleaned, wipe the surface with a clean damp cloth and allow it to dry completely before proceeding with any sanding, priming, or painting.

If you're unsure whether a piece contains wax, it's safest to assume it does—especially with antique furniture, vintage furniture, chalk-painted pieces, milk-painted pieces, or furniture that has been regularly polished.

A few extra minutes spent removing wax can prevent adhesion issues later.

  • In most cases, yes.

As long as the existing finish is stable, clean, and properly prepared, Morphose can be applied over previously painted surfaces.

  • Yes.

Morphose can be applied over many existing painted surfaces, including oil-based finishes, provided the surface is properly cleaned and prepared.

The most important factor is not whether the existing paint is oil-based or water-based—it's whether the surface is clean, stable, and able to accept a new coating.

    For previously painted surfaces:

    Water-Based Paint

    • Clean thoroughly

    • Lightly scuff glossy finishes if needed

    • Prime if adhesion is questionable

    • Apply Morphose

    Oil-Based Paint

    • Clean thoroughly

    • Lightly scuff sand to create a surface profile

    • Apply Bonding Primer

    • Apply Morphose

Older furniture, cabinetry, trim, and built-ins are often coated with oil-based finishes. With proper preparation and a quality bonding primer, these surfaces can typically be painted successfully.

  • Yes.

Stained wood can typically be painted successfully after proper cleaning and preparation. Woods prone to tannin bleed may require a stain-blocking primer.

  • Morphose can be applied directly to many raw wood surfaces, though certain wood species may benefit from a stain-blocking primer to prevent tannin bleed.

Raw wood also provides an excellent surface for creating layered, translucent finishes. By thinning Morphose with water and applying it in light coats, you can create a soft color wash that allows the natural grain and character of the wood to remain visible.

Many furniture artists use this technique to achieve the appearance of a stain while introducing subtle color that traditional stains cannot provide.

As with any decorative technique, we recommend testing on a sample board first, as different wood species absorb color differently.

Morphose can be wet or dry distressed if a timeworn or layered finish is desired.

application

  • Most projects require two coats.

Some colors and substrates may require additional coats for complete coverage.

  • Under normal conditions, allow approximately 1–2 hours between coats.

Temperature, humidity, and airflow may affect drying times.

  • For best results, apply Morphose when temperatures are between 50°F and 90°F.

Extreme heat, cold, or humidity can affect drying and curing.

  • Yes.

Morphose can be sprayed using most HVLP and airless spray systems.

Depending on your equipment, thinning and straining may be recommended. Refer to your owner’s manual for dilution instructions and always test on scrap before spraying your piece.

  • Yes.

Many customers successfully apply Morphose using high-quality microfiber rollers.

  • We recommend a high-quality synthetic brush designed for water-based paints.

The Mélange Studio Oval Brush is particularly well suited for furniture applications.

  • This is normal.

Morphose is formulated to self-level as it dries. What you see during application often softens significantly as the paint cures.

    Avoid overworking the paint.

You can also use a misting bottle or add extender if needed (sometimes useful during hot or dry conditions).

  • Morphose is typically dry to the touch within 1 hour under normal conditions. Recoat time is typically 1-2 hours.

  • Full cure generally develops over approximately 21–30 days.

While the paint may feel dry much sooner, maximum hardness develops gradually during the curing process.

  • Yes.

However, we recommend treating freshly painted surfaces gently during the first several weeks.

Avoid dragging objects, stacking items, or aggressive cleaning.

  • Yes.

Morphose was designed specifically for furniture and cabinetry applications.

Proper preparation and cure time are essential for best results.

  • Most projects do not require one.

Morphose includes a built-in finish suitable for the majority of furniture and cabinetry applications.

  • Additional protection may be beneficial for:

    • Dining tables

    • Desktops

    • Restaurant furniture

    • Commercial applications

    • Extremely high-use surfaces

  • Morphose is designed primarily for interior furniture and cabinetry applications and is not UV rated.

Exterior exposure may reduce long-term performance and durability.

  • Yes.

The Morphose Collection was developed as a cohesive palette, with every color carefully evaluated alongside every other color in the collection.

  • Our colors are inspired by natural history, collected objects, weathered materials, landscapes, art, and observation. Rather than chasing trends, we focus on creating colors with depth, character, and lasting appeal that contribute to a thoughtfully curated collection.

Orders & shipping

  • Most orders are processed in the order they are received and ship as quickly as possible- usually within 1-2 business days. Shipping time is an additional 3-5 business days.

Processing times may vary during launches, promotions, and periods of high demand.

  • Shipping policies and thresholds are available at checkout and may change periodically.

Leakage & damages

  • Please inspect your order upon arrival and contact us promptly if there are any issues.

Photos of damaged items and packaging help us resolve claims quickly.

  • Occasionally, minor leakage can occur during transit due to normal temperature fluctuations, elevation changes, and pressure variations within the shipping network.

In most cases, this results in a small amount of paint collecting around the lid or inside the packaging and does not affect the usability of the product.

If your container arrives with minor leakage:

    1. Wipe the container clean before opening.

    2. Ensure the lid is securely seated.

    3. Stir the paint thoroughly before use.

    4. Inspect the paint for normal color and consistency.

A small amount of leakage around the lid is generally considered cosmetic shipping damage and typically does not impact product performance.

A small amount of leakage around the lid is generally considered cosmetic shipping damage and typically does not impact product performance.

  • Paint containers travel through a wide range of temperatures, elevations, and atmospheric conditions during shipment.

These changes can occasionally cause small amounts of product to escape around the lid seal despite proper packaging.

While we take great care in packing every order, minor leakage can sometimes occur and is not necessarily an indication of a defective product.

A small amount of paint residue around the lid or inside the shipping carton does not typically qualify for replacement or store credit, as the product remains fully usable.

Cold weather shipping

  • Yes.

We monitor weather conditions closely throughout the shipping process and take additional precautions during cold-weather periods.

When freezing temperatures are expected, we will include heat packs and adjust shipping schedules to help protect your order during transit.

Our goal is to ensure your paint arrives in excellent condition regardless of the season.

We also encourage customers to track their shipments during periods of freezing weather and bring packages indoors as soon as possible after delivery. While we take every reasonable precaution before and during transit, prompt retrieval is one of the most effective ways to protect paint from temperature-related damage.

  • During periods of extreme cold, we may:

    • Include insulated packaging and heat packs

    • Delay shipments to avoid severe weather events

    • Adjust shipping schedules to reduce weekend transit time

    • Hold orders temporarily until temperatures improve

Heat packs used in winter shipments can provide warmth for up to five days under normal conditions.

Because every weather event is different, shipping decisions are made on a case-by-case basis to help protect your order.

We appreciate customers monitoring tracking information and retrieving packages promptly upon delivery, particularly during periods of freezing weather.

  • Cold paint is not necessarily damaged paint.

    If your order arrives cold:

    1. Bring it indoors immediately.

    2. Allow the paint to gradually return to room temperature.

    3. Let the container sit unopened for 24–48 hours.

    4. Stir thoroughly before use.

Do not attempt to evaluate the paint while it is still cold.

  • Paint that has been damaged by freezing may exhibit:

    • Large clumps that cannot be mixed back together

    • A grainy or cottage cheese-like texture

    • Excessive separation that does not reincorporate after stirring

    • Unusual odor or consistency

If you suspect your paint may have been damaged during transit, please contact us before using the product.

Photos of the paint and packaging can help us assess the situation.

  • Sometimes.

Paint that was exposed to cold temperatures but did not actually freeze is often perfectly usable after returning to room temperature.

However, paint that has experienced a hard freeze may suffer permanent changes in texture and performance.

If you have concerns about the condition of your paint, please contact us before beginning your project.

We're happy to help determine whether the product is suitable for use.

storage & shelf life

  • This is not recommended.

Paint should always be stored in a temperature-controlled environment.

Avoid prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures, excessive heat, or direct sunlight.

For best results, store paint indoors between approximately 50°F and 90°F.

  • Wipe rims and lids clean before closing. Store tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry location away from freezing temperatures and direct sunlight.

Avoid exposing paint to extreme temperatures.

  • When stored properly in a tightly sealed container, Morphose has an expected shelf life of approximately 5–7 years, and may remain usable even longer under ideal storage conditions.

    To maximize shelf life:

    • Keep containers tightly sealed when not in use

    • Store indoors in a temperature-controlled environment

    • Avoid prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures

    • Avoid excessive heat and direct sunlight

    • Keep paint from repeatedly freezing and thawing

Over time, some settling is normal. Paint that has been properly stored can often be restored with thorough stirring or mechanical mixing.

If you have an older container and are unsure whether it remains usable, we recommend opening the container and evaluating its odor, consistency, and ability to mix back together before use.

safety & usage

  • Yes.

Morphose is a water-based, low-VOC furniture and cabinetry paint designed for interior use.

As with any paint product, we recommend applying in a well-ventilated area and following all label instructions.

  • Many customers use Morphose without extensive protective equipment during normal brush and roller applications.

However, PPE may be used according to personal preference and project conditions.

    Recommended protective equipment may include:

    • Protective gloves

    • Safety glasses

    • Protective clothing

    • Respiratory protection when spraying or when ventilation is limited

Always follow the recommendations provided on the product label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

  • Yes.

When spraying any paint product, appropriate respiratory protection should be worn according to the equipment, environment, and application method being used.

Always follow the recommendations provided by your spray equipment manufacturer and applicable safety guidelines.

  • Yes.

Like all paint products, Morphose should be kept out of the reach of children and pets.

Do not allow children or animals access to paint containers, application tools, or freshly painted surfaces until they are dry and the work area has been cleaned.

Store all paint products securely when not in use.

  • Many customers choose to use Morphose on children's furniture, nursery furniture, and family heirloom pieces.

Morphose is a water-based, low-VOC paint designed for furniture and cabinetry applications.

As with any paint product, we recommend allowing the finish to cure fully before placing furniture into regular use. Full cure typically develops over approximately 21–30 days under normal conditions.

Because every family's comfort level and circumstances are different, Mélange Paints cannot make specific recommendations regarding individual applications, including cribs, teething rails, or furniture that may be chewed, mouthed, or subjected to unusual wear.

We encourage customers to review the product label, Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and all available product information when determining suitability for a particular project.

  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available for Mélange Paints products and provide detailed information regarding safe handling, storage, and use.

Please refer to the appropriate SDS for the product you are using.
