Hemp Oil Finish | 16 oz

Nourish. Protect. Preserve.

A timeless finish for wood—and one of our favorite secret weapons for beautifully finished furniture.

Our Hemp Oil Finish is made with 100% pure hemp oil to nourish, enrich, and protect wood from within. Unlike film-forming finishes that sit on the surface, hemp oil penetrates deeply into the wood fibers, enhancing natural grain, restoring moisture, and leaving behind a warm, low-luster finish that only becomes more beautiful with age.

Perfect for cutting boards, butcher blocks, wooden utensils, furniture, and handcrafted wood pieces, Hemp Oil Finish celebrates the beauty of natural materials while helping protect them from everyday dryness and wear.

But here's something many furniture artists don't know...

At Mélange, Hemp Oil Finish is also one of our favorite ways to elevate fully cured painted furniture, especially darker colors. Applied sparingly and buffed to a soft sheen, it enriches color, softens the finish, minimizes the appearance of fingerprints and dust, and adds a subtle layer of additional protection once cured—all without the streaking often associated with furniture waxes.

Whether you're restoring an heirloom, maintaining a handcrafted cutting board, or giving a freshly painted piece its final touch, Hemp Oil Finish is a simple, time-tested finish you'll reach for again and again.

Why Hemp Oil?

Not all wood oils perform the same.

Some oils simply soak into the wood and remain oily until they are washed away or reapplied. Others, known as drying oils, naturally cure through a process called polymerization. As the oil reacts with oxygen in the air, it gradually hardens within the wood fibers, creating a breathable, long-lasting finish rather than a temporary surface treatment.

Hemp oil is one of these naturally polymerizing oils.

Unlike mineral oil, which never fully cures, hemp oil penetrates deep into the wood before gradually hardening over time. The result is a finish that nourishes the wood from within while helping to protect it from everyday wear.

Because hemp oil cures naturally, we recommend applying thin coats, wiping away all excess, and allowing adequate time between applications for the finish to fully develop.

How to Use

For Raw Wood

Apply a liberal coat using a lint-free cloth or brush. Allow the oil to penetrate for 20–30 minutes before wiping away any excess with a clean cloth. Allow the finish to cure thoroughly before use. Additional coats may be applied to build richness and protection.

For Painted Furniture

Apply only to fully cured paint.

Using a lint-free cloth, work a very thin coat over the painted surface. Allow the oil to sit for just a few minutes before thoroughly wiping away all excess. Finish by buffing the surface with a clean, lint-free cloth until it feels dry and develops a soft, even sheen.

This simple technique deepens darker paint colors, creates a rich hand-rubbed appearance, helps disguise fingerprints and dust, and provides a subtle layer of additional protection once fully cured.

Curing & Recoat Times

Hemp Oil Finish cures naturally through exposure to oxygen, a process known as polymerization. Because it contains no added solvents or chemical drying agents, curing takes longer than many conventional wood finishes—but the result is a beautiful, breathable finish that becomes part of the wood rather than simply coating it.

Recoat Time

Allow 24 hours between coats under normal conditions.

If the wood still feels cool, tacky, or oily after 24 hours, allow additional drying time before applying another coat.

Full Cure

Depending on temperature, humidity, airflow, and the amount applied, Hemp Oil Finish typically reaches a full cure in 2–4 weeks.

Dense hardwoods, cooler temperatures, high humidity, or heavier applications may extend curing time.

Best Results

  • Apply thin, even coats.

  • Allow the oil to penetrate for 20–30 minutes.

  • Thoroughly wipe away all excess oil.

  • Buff the surface with a clean, lint-free cloth.

  • Allow good air circulation while the finish cures.

Thin coats always outperform one heavy application.

Studio Tip

This is one of our favorite finishing techniques in the Mélange studio.

On deep, saturated colors like blacks, charcoals, deep greens, navy blues, and rich browns, a light application of Hemp Oil Finish can dramatically enhance depth while reducing the appearance of fingerprints and everyday dust.

Unlike many waxes, we've found hemp oil buffs beautifully without streaking when applied sparingly and all excess is removed.

As always, less is more. A thin coat and a thorough buffing are the keys to a flawless finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this on cutting boards and butcher blocks?

Absolutely. Hemp Oil Finish is an excellent choice for cutting boards, butcher blocks, wooden utensils, serving boards, and other unfinished wood surfaces. Allow the oil to cure completely before returning the surface to use.

Can I use this over paint?

Yes. In fact, it's one of our favorite ways to finish fully cured painted furniture. A light coat buffed to a soft sheen enhances color, enriches darker shades, and leaves the surface feeling beautifully smooth.

Does it contain solvents or drying additives?

No. Our Hemp Oil Finish contains only one ingredient: pure hemp oil.

Will it change the color of my wood?

Yes. Like most penetrating oils, hemp oil deepens the natural tone of wood, highlighting grain and adding warmth while maintaining a natural, low-luster appearance.

⚠️ Safety: Oil-soaked rags can generate heat as drying oils cure and may present a fire hazard if improperly discarded. After use, lay oily cloths flat to dry completely in a well-ventilated area or store them in a sealed metal container filled with water before disposal. Never leave oil-soaked rags crumpled in a pile.
